J.Lo, Matchbox 20 and Ringo Starr on Flash Drives: Will Flash music click?

mars-volta-usb-flash-driveSome major labels have recently decided to include music in flash drives. No, they don’t just save the songs to sell but rather they use the flash drives as a promotional tool to build fan loyalty instead of a digital version or a CD.

Mars Volta, Jennifer Lopez, Matchbox 20, and Ringo Starr are among the first few artists to experiment with USB flash drives. For only $30, fans could get a copy of their favorite artist’s new album. But at present, such USB drives are initially offered as collectibles.

Question is: could this eliminate piracy? This one could set a music trend but I doubt this will end rampant music stealing. And since USB flash drives are more costly than music albums on CDs, how do we expect the music labels profit from this new trend?
