Sony fretting and fuming about opportunities lost in Digital Music space

Sony Ericsson W890i by you.

Sony is not in a good mood these days, and there are several legitimate reasons why. It’s sitting in front of a pie that it could have eaten, had it not waited too long, and let Apple come and smooth-talk it out of it (with the Apple iPod and the iTunes Store that is).

That’s the mood Sony CEO Howard Stringer put on when he spoke with Nikkei Electronics Asia about why the company didn’t take open technology very seriously in the past, and how it could have gone places if it did. They blame it on DRM, and regret the fact that had they focussed on more open technology management allowing users the freedom to explore avenues, it would have definitely beaten Apple to it (or so it thinks).

Sony boss Stringer also spoke about evolving the PS3 into a platform of web services, but didn’t go too much into specifications.

Hopefully, they are also contemplating an online video store for the PS! Looks like Stringer spoke about these possibilities just now, but has started working on the open direction a while ago.
