The Slump of 3D

3D Glasses Broken

Based on the revenues of subsequent 3D screenings after the smash hit Avatar, it seems the 3D format won’t be reigning our silver screens or living rooms just yet.

Gizmodo reports that people are opting to spend $10 on a regular 2D screening rather than spend $5 more on a 3D screening when given the option. Based on a chart released by Hollywood blog The Wrap, the movie Despicable Me only brought in 45% of revenue from 3D screenings, compared to Avatar’s 71% percent 3D-screening revenue. While the rest of Hollywood is scrambling to get into the 3D bandwagon, filmmaker Christopher Nolan is reported to shoot Batman 3 in non-3D IMAX.

Meanwhile, despite the tremendous efforts of manufacturers and content creators to bring 3D television into the living room TV experience, consumers don’t feel the need yet to acquire new TV sets with 3D capabilities.
Besides, a pair of 3D glasses, which also have incompatibility issues across brands and models, cost a fortune.

So, is 3D just a fluke or a trend? Let us know in the comments.
