RIM replaces Nokia on No. 5 spot, Samsung and Apple still on top

IDC 3rd quarter 2012

Apple and Samsung may be fighting (actually, what they have is war) over patents, filing lawsuits left and right but these two are still the kings of the smartphone industry. Meanwhile, former top player Nokia lost its Top Five ranking to RIM.

IDC’s recent report showed some major changes in the mobile industry. Growth of shipments is still rapid at 45.3 percent. The whole mobile phone market, compared to last year same quarter, grew 2.4%.

The growth of the cellphone industry is expected but went beyond expectations.

Samsung and Apple devices accounted for half of the 179.7 million smartphones sold during the 3RD quarter of 2012. Samsung is still number one while Apple is no. 2.

Sad news for Nokia, RIM placed its no. 5 spot. We’ll see if the upcoming Windows Phone 8 launch this October 29 will make a difference to both Nokia and Microsoft.
