Sad news. I knew this day would come but now that it’s happening, I just feel sad. Sony recently announced that it will be laying off about 2,000 employees before the year 2012 ends–twenty-percent of staff at the Tokyo headquarters and another 20% from Sony’s Home Entertainment and Sound Business Group.
This move is part of Sony’s goal to reduce about six percent of the total workforce by March 2013. We all know how Sony sales are doing: PS Vita sales was slow in Japan, the PSP comic store being shut down, rumor about Xperia phones being delayed, and etc.
In Minokamo, Japan, a Sony factory is also closing. In this branch alone, 840 employees will be losing their jobs. The Minokamo factory is where phones, lens blocks, and DSLR interchangeable lenses are made.
